OHS Responsibilities
Pandemic Influenza Preparedness
In the interests of a consistent approach to pandemic influenza preparedness, WorkCover NSW adopts the advice of NSW Health, the lead agency in such an emergency.

WorkCover recommends accessing the most up-to-date information from NSW Health or phone (02) 9391 9000.

Under the whole-of-government response to a pandemic crisis, WorkCover has two specific responsibilities:

  • assist the Office of Industrial Relations and the Public Employment Office in formulating occupational health and safety policies to be implemented during an influenza pandemic
  • membership of a Special State Recovery Committee, which is activated in the event of a pandemic.

With assistance from WorkCover, the Office of Industrial Relations has developed a workplace guide to managing influenza pandemic.  It outlines employers’ key OHS responsibilities and includes ameliorating strategies to combat the spread of the pandemic virus in the workplace.  It also outlines the industrial relations issues that could arise during a pandemic outbreak.

View the Workplace Guide to Managing Influenza.

WorkCover’s guide, Working from home - a guide to OHS, rehabilitation and workers compensation requirements may also assist in preparing for pandemics.
