Unguarded Cooling Fan Belt Systems on Generator Sets
Safety Alert No: 4042                                         Date of Issue: 01 April 1997

Recently, an employee was pulled by her clothing into the drive shaft and belt of an unguarded cooling fan of a diesel generator set.

The generator was 20KVA, mechanically coupled to a diesel engine. The generator including the cooling system was supplied as an assembled unit. It was an emergency backup in case mains power failed.

Investigation revealed that these generators were supplied throughout Australia.

The generator was designed and manufactured to cover a wide variety of industrial and rural applications. Being comparatively small the generator was suitable for use for small industry such as hospital theatres or day nurseries.

A further incident occurred when an employee lost a finger when it came into contact with the exposed blades of the generator air intake fan.
