Workers Compensation Independent Review Office (WIRO)
WIRO is an independent office established by the NSW Government to help injured workers and employers navigate through the Workers Compensation Scheme. It also oversees the operations of the scheme to ensure there is a fair, efficient and effective workers compensation system in NSW.
Help for injured workers
WIRO provides assistance for injured workers who have issues, inquiries or concerns about their claim with the insurer by contacting the insurer to find a solution. Insurers have agreed to provide a response within two business days. Where more information is provided, it may take longer however in many cases WIRO is able to negotiate a reasonable outcome for an injured worker, with over 80 per cent of complaints resolved within 10 days.
Injured workers don’t need to contact the insurer before seeking help from WIRO.
WIRO also manages the provision of funding for legal advice and assistance for injured workers who are involved in a dispute with their insurer. This service assists every worker with a reasonable basis for challenging a decision of an insurer through the Workers Compensation Commission.
An injured worker who seeks funding should contact one of the approved lawyers listed on the WIRO website, and an application will be made by that lawyer.
Help for employers
WIRO can assist employers who have a difficulty with the management of claims against them by insurers. WIRO can also help employers establish a complaint resolution process for complaints arising out of the workers compensation acts.
General workers compensation help
WIRO provides education for everyone involved in the provision of any part of the NSW WorkCover Scheme, by providing speakers to any interested group and also by delivering seminars in CBD and regional areas.
There is no charge for the service.
