An orthopaedic surgeon is a medical practitioner who is recognised by the Medical Board of Australia or Medicare Australia as a specialist in orthopaedic surgery. They must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as a specialist in surgery, in the field of orthopaedic surgery. This includes an orthopaedic surgeon who is a staff member providing services at a public hospital.
Arrangements between the Australian Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons and SIRA Workers Compensation Regulation are designed to ensure that workers have priority access to orthopaedic surgeons. This agreement includes a level of remuneration for orthopaedic procedures that is reflected in the orthopaedic surgeons fees order.
